Who It’s For: New Readers / Writers Continuing Work on Reading Comprehension + Writing Conventions Along with Analysis of (Simulated) Realia (Schedules, Maps, Rules, Road Signs) 

Why You Need It: Whether they walk, bike, drive, and/or take public transportation, language learners need to know and think about means of local transportation.  After understanding the main two-possibility story, text users interpret graphics with text, follow writing & spelling rules, and communicate about the topic in writing.   

What You’ll / They’ll Do:  

[1] In Part One / The Story, talk about “pre-reading” illustrations and vocabulary.  Get and build on the beginning of the narrative, “A Bus Ride.” Choose one of two possible two endings to the story, retell it, and compare it to its alternative.  

[2] In Part Two / Practical Reading & Writing, work with sample (reproduced) and then current bus schedules and route / subway maps. After viewing traffic rules and signs, answer typical quiz questions on them.

[3] In Part Three / the Rules of Writing, review what you know or get what you need in regard to writing conventions, more vowel spellings, and possessive noun endings.  Practice these.  After hearing, writing, and checking a sample paragraph, use it as a template for your own brief story. 

[4]  In Part Four / Communicating in Writing, fill in blanks for street directions. Draw a simple map and describe it.  Write a (sample and/or real) accident report.
